Built in 2002, the George H. Carroll Lion Habitat is a first-class, dual-environment complex for the University of North Alabama’s live lion mascots. Funded by the late caretaker David Carrol and named in honor of his father, George, the Carroll Lion Habitat is a $1.3 million facility habitat based on AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) guidelines and incorporated ideas from other leading zoo facilities. 

 

Boasting hospitable indoor and outdoor areas for lions, along with a kitchen and service areas for their caretakers. The outdoor focal point features key lion environment features such as boulders, streams, a waterfall, and a pond. During the day, Leo III, the lion, plays or sleeps in the outdoor portion of the habitat. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has given the habitat 15 consecutive 100 percent ratings during their unannounced visits for inspections.

Visitors to UNA’s campus are encouraged to leave their respects at the habitat in the front of campus.
